Van Finance with a Provisional Licence

Learning to drive and want to finance a van for when you pass — here's the reality.

The situation

Most UK van finance lenders require a full driving licence before they'll approve an agreement, since the vehicle needs to be insurable and usable from day one — a provisional licence alone is rarely enough on its own. Some will consider an application close to a test date, or with a named additional driver who holds a full licence, but this varies significantly by lender.

What tends to help

  • Check with the specific lender or broker before applying — policies on provisional licences vary and change, so don't assume a blanket rule.
  • If you're close to passing your test, some lenders may agree to hold or timeline an application around your test date — ask directly.
  • A full-licence named driver added to the policy and, where the lender allows it, the agreement can sometimes bridge the gap.
  • Building your credit file while you finish learning (electoral roll registration, on-time payments elsewhere) means you're in a stronger position the moment you pass.

Lenders worth checking
