The challenge
A CCJ or default is one of the more serious adverse markers a lender sees, and most mainstream banks will decline automatically. Specialist non-prime lenders will still consider an application, but expect a higher representative APR, and lenders will generally want to know whether the CCJ/default is satisfied and how recent it is.
What tends to help
- A satisfied CCJ (one you've paid off) is viewed more favourably than an unsatisfied one — settle it if you can before applying.
- The more recent the CCJ/default, the harder underwriting tends to be; time since the event genuinely helps.
- Be upfront about it on the application — lenders will see it on the credit check regardless, and consistency helps trust.
- A larger deposit is one of the more effective levers available in this situation.
